January Floods/Landslides: Whatcom County was declared eligible for federal disaster assistance on Friday, February 6, 2009.

To apply for FEMA Assistance, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585, between 8 am and 8 pm seven days a week. Multilingual operators are available to answer your call. Or, apply on-line at www.disasterassistance.gov.

Disaster assistance can include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Low-interest disaster loans from the US Small Business Administration (SBA) also will be available to cover residential and business losses not covered by insurance.

Emergency Road Closures and Restrictions

This is a partial list. Road conditions may change rapidly. Delays between when a road is closed and when staff are able to update this list may be long. Use caution on all roads.

  • Baker Lake Road - At Sulphur Creek - One-lane bridge
  • Emerald Lake - Single Lane Traffic - 1800 Block - Caution
  • Gulf Rd. - one lane road - erosion - Caution
  • H Street Road - W of 280 - Caution/Shoulder Erosion
  • Innis Creek Road - south of Doran - Water / Debris Over Roadway and Loose Gravel
  • Jackman - 9633 and 9643 - Caution/Shoulder erosion
  • Legoe Bay at West Shore - Lummi Island - Rough Road, Loose Gravel
