Homeowner Certification Training

Homeowner Certification Training

The Whatcom County Code allows homeowners who become certified to complete evaluations of their on-site sewage systems (OSS), except for the following system types:

  1. Proprietary OSS technologies, i.e. aerobic treatment units (ATU’s), Biofilters, Drip irrigation.
  2. Community drainfields, i.e. an OSS that serves more than one residence.
  3. OSS that have been repaired and were considered non-conforming at the time of permit issuance due to the site conditions.
  4. OSS that are serving food service establishments.

All gravity, non-pressurized mound (gravity mound), pressure distribution, pressure mound and sand filter OSS may be evaluated by homeowners.  To determine your system type, refer to your OSS permit if you have a copy.  The system type is usually noted on the front page.  If there is no permit available for your OSS, it is most likely a gravity system.  If you do not know your system type, contact our office at (360) 676-6724 or via email at Health_EH_Parcel@whatcomcounty.us.

Once you determine what type of OSS you have, you can click on the following link to register for homeowner training.  There are two types of classes:

  1. Gravity – for those systems consisting of only a septic tank and gravity drainfield and non-pressurized mounds.  Those systems that pump to a gravity distribution drainfield would also register for this class.  Gravity distribution of the effluent in the drainfield is the key, even if a pump is used to deliver effluent to the drainfield elevation.
  2. Pressure – all those systems consisting of a pump that distributes effluent to the drainfield through small diameter pressurized pipes.  Pressure distribution, Pressure mound, and Sand filters.
