Welcome to Lighthouse Marine Park

Lighthouse Marine Park entrance

Lighthouse Marine Park anchors the southwest corner of Point Roberts, a five square mile piece of Whatcom County accessed from the rest of the county only by water or through Canada. This unique situation has provided this place with its own history and sense of community--A Place Apart.

Native Straits Salish people attach great significance to Point Roberts, recognizing its role as a gathering place for hundreds of generations harvesting the bounty of sockeye salmon. The Oregon Treaty of 1846 fixed the boundary between the United States and Canada at 49 degrees north latitude, isolating Point Roberts from the rest of the United States. In 1908, the land was opened to homesteaders, but the southwest corner was reserved for a lighthouse station that was never built. These 21 acres eventually became Lighthouse Marine Park.

View of boardwalk from above

Today's visitors enjoy the opportunity to relax by the beach, picnic in the shade of boardwalk shelters, go fishing, dig clams, or stay in the campground. Numerous barbeques are provided around the perimeter of the boardwalk (bring your own briquettes), and potable water is available at several locations. Restrooms are also located on the boardwalk.

The Orca Center display board

Lighthouse Marine Park has become known as one of the best places to view Orca whales from land. In summer months, members of the three local pods frequently pass close by these shores, offering a thrilling glimpse of the lives of these endangered animals. Watch for Orcas coming to the surface to breathe while swimming or feeding, and you may also be treated to a spectacle of jumps and tail slaps! Viewing Orcas from land protects them from the potential disturbances of boat-based viewing. Find interpretive exhibits about Orcas in the Orca Center located on the boardwalk. Lifeforce Foundation, a marine mammal research organization, has furnished it with information and photos.
