Lake Whatcom Hertz Trail2Current development projects at Lake Whatcom Park consist of both trail development and trailhead improvements. Trail development is near completion, with construction of new trails ongoing since 2017. Trailhead improvements are at the beginning of the planning phase, with early conceptual design options being developed.

Scope

Approximately 4.25 miles of new hiking-only trail will be constructed connecting the Chanterelle and Hertz trails in the park. Climbing more than 2,000 feet of elevation, this connection will create a looped trail experience for hikers.

Trail Head Improvements

Parks has contracted with MacLeod Reckord for inventory, design and planning assistance for improvements to the park’s trailheads. This design project will help inform future decisions and improvements to address the following:

  • Additional parking for visitors and reduction of vehicle parking along North Shore Road
  • Improved traffic and pedestrian flow in the park
  • Stormwater treatment 
  • Public restrooms
  • Connectivity between the Chanterelle and Hertz trailheads
