A public health emergency such as a natural disaster, disease outbreak, or hazardous chemical spill can quickly overwhelm resources in a community. We plan and coordinate ahead of time so that we’re ready to respond to an emergency and maintain efficient public health services for the visitors and residents of Whatcom County.
You can also prepare for emergencies ahead of time so that you can stay safe.
- Create a Family Communication Plan (PDF) and practice it, so everyone knows what to do - and where to meet - if you’re not all together when disaster strikes.
- Police, fire, medical, and other resources can become overwhelmed during a disaster. Neighborhoods that prepare by participating in the Map Your Neighborhood program are more effective in their response to a disaster and have an increased capacity to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours after a disaster.
