Project Status

The project is currently in Phase 1, which includes:

  •  Topographic Survey/Site Reconnaissance
  •  Preliminary Engineering
  •  Community Engagement
  •  Type, Size, & Location Analysis

Anticipated Project Timeline

  • Phase 1 - Topographic Survey, Preliminary Engineering, and Type, Size, & Location Analysis (Current Phase).
  • Phase 2 - Detailed Design & Permitting (2023-2025).
  • Phase 3 - Construction (TBD).

Project Updates

Project re-engagement is scheduled for early 2023 after being put on a temporary hold while Whatcom County responded to historic flooding. In the meantime, the project team has been busy performing preliminary engineering analysis to help define site constraints and develop bridge alternatives. Be on the lookout for upcoming engagement opportunities, and make sure to sign up for project updates (directions below).

A competitive grant opportunity for federal funding was pursued earlier this year. The team was successful in its grant application and was awarded federal funding for the replacement bridge project.

Public Participation

We want your help and input as we design what the next bridge will look like. Information gathered from the public will help us develop alternative bridge designs as we move forward. Public participation will come from virtual open house-style events and an online survey.

Virtual Open Houses

Two virtual open houses are planned to provide opportunities for public input on bridge features, size, aesthetics, traffic modifications, and temporary construction impacts.

  • The first open house was held on Feb. 3, 2021.
  • The project was temporarily put on hold while Whatcom County Public Works responded to the historic 2021 flooding events. It is anticipated that the second open house will take place in summer 2023.

Online Survey

  • The survey is closed. Results will be posted soon.
