In summer 2021, the Bertrand Watershed Improvement District, in partnership with Whatcom Diking District #4, Drainage Improvement District #1, the Whatcom County Flood Control Zone District, and affected landowners, replaced older, inefficient floodgates with state of the art Self Regulating Floodgates.  

Project Benefits

  • Provide better protection to farmland during spring and fall high water events
  • Provide better drainage after flood events
  • Improve fish habitat by removing a fish passage barrier, provide refuge habitat for juvenile fish during flood events, restore access to upstream spawning habitat 
  • Improved flood water storage capacity during sequential flood events
