Drayton Harbor Road Landslide Repair

Project Summary & Benefits

A 300-foot section of Drayton Harbor Road was damaged from a landslide of the supporting embankment during the November 2021 flood event. The affected portion of the roadway is located immediately west of the intersection with Shintaffer Road. For safety, the westbound lane of the roadway is closed, with vehicles restricted to a single-lane, alternating two-way traffic pattern. Travelers are encouraged to detour on Semiahmoo Parkway during this closure.

The County’s project to repair the road will include the following components:

  • Stabilize the roadway embankment slope
  • Reconstruct the roadway
  • Restore the two-lane traffic pattern
  • Install stormwater infrastructure, as required
  • Relocate various utilities, if impacted by the project

Project Updates

(6/28/23) Whatcom County Public Works has executed a design contract with a consultant team of geotechnical, civil, structural, and coastal engineers to develop a solution for restoring Drayton Harbor Road. The consultant team’s first step in the design process is to complete an alternatives analysis to help identify the preferred slope stabilization and roadway repair concept. The alternatives analysis is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2023.

Future design and permitting efforts will require extended time to appropriately repair what is a complex and environmentally & culturally sensitive area.

In the weeks and months ahead, you may see Public Works staff and consultants on-site gathering information to assist with their design.
