Background
On April 26, 2011, the Whatcom County Council approved a resolution establishing a Whatcom County Jail Planning Task Force to work on the appropriate size and location of new jail facilities. This Task Force was appointed by the County Executive and began serving in June, 2011.

The need for a new jail has been identified as a critical public facility that requires public involvement and significant commitment of time in order to accommodate the pressing need for a new jail in Whatcom County. A public meeting was held on February 3, 2011 to present a draft jail proposal and invite public comment.
