Planned Service Outage for Whatcom Chief

Wednesday, May 31, 2023

The Whatcom Chief will be out of service from 10:10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, to inspect and maintain the ferry terminal facilities at both Lummi Island and Gooseberry Point.

  • The last morning run from the Gooseberry Point side will be 9:50 a.m., and the last morning run from the Lummi Island side will be 10 a.m.
  • In order to fully inspect the terminal facilities, no additional runs will be made after the 10 a.m. run from Lummi Island.
  • Public Works is now scheduling inspection and maintenance approximately every two months.
  • Inspection and maintenance activities are weather-dependent, and the times and/or dates may change. If schedule changes occur, updates will be posted at www.whatcomcounty.us/ferry.

Why wasn’t this work performed during dry dock?

We need large equipment, including a bucket truck, to thoroughly inspect both terminal facilities. We can only move these vehicles to Lummi Island when the Whatcom Chief is in service.

We understand that a planned outage on the heels of dry dock is not ideal. However, performing this work now allows us to get it out of the way before the busy summer season. As a result, we don’t anticipate another planned outage until August. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
