Results of the 2018 Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) were released yesterday. Washington State students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 take the HYS every two years, voluntarily answering a wide variety of questions about health behaviors and other factors that affect youth health.
Whatcom County Results
Results specific to Whatcom County youth are now available. WCHD is also preparing detailed data briefs for several important local topics. WCHD will be releasing the more detailed topical data briefs starting in April. Topics to be covered include mental health; substance use; nutrition, physical activity and obesity; sexual health and relationships; and violence and safety. WCHD staff are working with community partners to use the data for collaborative planning of programs and interventions.
Youth Substance Use Results
While cigarette, alcohol and marijuana use have declined or stayed flat in recent years, vaping among youth statewide and in Whatcom County has increased significantly. Read more here.
