[ARCHIVED] Decision-Making About Closures and Cancellations

There remain no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Whatcom County at this time, but we know the risk of spread is increasing as more cases are confirmed in Washington State.

We are now asking organizations and event organizers in our community to consider ways to minimize the risk of spreading infection. We recognize that organizations may choose to implement risk-reduction strategies, such as canceling non-essential gatherings or encouraging employees to work from home.

At this time, we are not recommending any specific closures or event cancelations. Every situation is different and each organization will need to weigh the consequences and benefits of risk-reduction strategies available to them before making any decisions. We understand that businesses and organizations provide essential services and need to maintain continuity of operations while still protecting the health of their employees and our community.

Large organizations are encouraged to consult with the health department before making these decisions. Organizations that wish to consult with the health department should contact our Liaison Officer at [email protected] or by calling (360) 778-6000.

We are continuing to monitor our local situation and are prepared to adjust as needed.

Personal action continues to be a key part of reducing the spread of disease. We continue to ask that everyone in our community take the following personal actions:

  • Do not go to the emergency room unless essential. We need to ensure that our health care resources are available for those with the most critical needs.

  • If you are sick with mild illness, stay home and limit your contact with others, including your pets. Be especially mindful to avoid contact with vulnerable populations including people 60 years old and older, people with underlying conditions, and pregnant individuals.

  • If you have symptoms like cough, fever, or other respiratory problems and need to seek medical care, call your healthcare provider. Keep away from others and, if possible, wear a mask before leaving the house.

  • Practice excellent personal hygiene habits, including handwashing, coughing into a tissue or your elbow, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

  • Stay away from people who are ill, especially if you are 60 and older or have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, or a weakened immune system.

As the risk of spread of COVID-19 changes in our local area, our recommendations for personal and community action may change. Staying informed is a key action to protect yourself and our community. Information is changing frequently as the situation evolves.
