Starting on Jan. 1, 2021, the Ferry Division will charge a .50 cent credit card fee on all single-ride fare transactions. Multi-ride passes purchased with a credit card already pay a credit card fee. This change adds consistency by also charging a credit card fee for single-trip purchases.
“This is not a fare increase, we are simply recouping our losses from fees charged to us by the credit card companies,” said Senior Ferry Master Rich Hudson. “Just like with our multi-ride passes, riders can avoid any fees by paying for their fare with a check instead of a credit card.”
This change is important because the ferry system has seen a significant increase in credit card sales and their associated fees since the start of the pandemic.
“In 2020 we have seen real costs increase by thousands of dollars because of credit card fees, and the county can’t subsidize single-ride credit card purchases by absorbing these costs,” Hudson said.
