Active Incidents
Train Derailment Update. Incident Number 20-4465 has been assigned to this event.
The U.S. and Canada have extended an order closing their shared border to nonessential traffic until at least February 21, 2021. This includes both vehicular and boating between the countries.
The “Proclamation of Emergency” signed by the Whatcom County Executive concerning COVID-19 remains in effect. Information about Whatcom County’s response to COVID-19 is available at the Joint Information Center’s COVID-19 website.
Advisories, Watches and Warnings
A “Small Craft Advisory” remains in effect until 1:00pm this afternoon for northeast winds 20-30 knots.
A “Gale Watch” is in effect from late tonight through Wednesday morning for northeast winds 25-35 knots.
Weather Around Whatcom County
Whatcom County Inland Weather
We will see sun today but the temperatures will only top out at 38 degrees with slightly colder temperatures to the east. Tonight’s low will drop into the mid-20s with some clouds again with slightly cooler temperatures to the east. Tomorrow will be partly sunny and again, a few degrees colder. Tomorrow night will see lows near 18 degrees in Bellingham. Northeast wind will be around 5 mph today increasing to around 10 mph tonight and reaching gusts to 20 mph tomorrow. In the Sumas area, the east/northeast winds will gust to near 23 mph today and by tomorrow near 40mph. The wind chill could drop into the single digits. Also, a little light snow is in the forecast for Thursday Friday and Saturday. Maple Falls will see temperatures a few degrees colder, but will avoid much of the east/northeast wind until Thursday when gusts to 20 mph could develop; a little snow could fall in Maple Falls tomorrow night and Wednesday as well. Newhalem will be about the same but there will be some single digit lows on Wednesday and Thursday night.
Rivers and Streams
All forks of the Nooksack River have just about leveled off at Saxon Bridge and Cedarville. The River continues to drop fairly rapidly at Ferndale and will continue to do so. No changes are expected.
Whatcom County Coastal Weather
For the Strait and Inland Coastal Waters off Whatcom County northeast winds will continue through Friday with 15-25 knot and 25-35 knot winds. Small Craft Advisories and Gale Watches/Warning are likely for the entire period and may change with little notice. Check the marine weather forecast for advisories, watches and warnings before going out on the water for the latest updates.
