COVID-19 - The “Proclamation of Emergency” signed by the Whatcom County Executive concerning COVID-19 remains in effect. The U.S. and Canada have extended an order closing their shared border to nonessential traffic until at least April 21, 2021

Inland Weather
Conditions remain dry through the day on Thursday. A few high clouds will be seen tonight with increasing clouds on Thursday but no showers. Winds will be generally light. There will be a chance for a couple of light showers Thursday night but most hours are expected to be dry. These light spotty showers will end by the end of the night, which leads into another dry day on Friday but with some thick cloud cover that will minimize how high temperatures can get. Overall, no major concerns through Friday. Friday night and Saturday will be dry and then the next system will move in Saturday evening and night. Rain increases to periods of steadier rain overnight and decreases back to scattered showers Sunday morning before ending by early Sunday afternoon. After that, we return back to dry and calm weather for Monday and Tuesday next week.
Rivers and Streams
Flows within the rivers and streams of Whatcom County are normal with no likelihood of flooding.
Whatcom County Coastal Weather
For the Strait and Inland Coastal Waters off Whatcom County Strong A dissipating front will pass over the area today. Another front will reach the area Saturday into Sunday. Upper level ridging will bring generally benign conditions for the start of next week. Both Thursday and Friday this week are minus tides between 3:00 and 4:00, so with the mild weather it is a good time for exploring the beach.

Emergency Management Tips and Reminders
Tsunami Preparedness
A tsunami can kill or injure people and damage or destroy buildings and infrastructure as waves come in and go out. A tsunami is a series of enormous ocean waves caused by earthquakes, underwater landslides, volcanic eruptions, or asteroids. A tsunami in Whatcom County could reach between 10-20’ and cause flooding and disrupt transportation, power, communications, and the water supply. You can prepare for the potential of a tsunami in Whatcom County:
- If you live near, or regularly visit a coastal area, learn about the risk of tsunami in the area. Some at-risk communities have maps with evacuation zones and routes. If you are a visitor, ask about community plans.
- Learn the signs of a potential tsunami, such as an earthquake, a loud roar from the ocean, or unusual ocean behavior, such as a sudden rise or wall of water or sudden draining of water showing the ocean floor.
- Know and practice community evacuation plans and map out your routes from home, work, and play. Pick shelters 40 feet or more above sea level.
- Create a family emergency communication plan that has an out-of-state contact. Plan where to meet if you get separated.
- Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
- Consider earthquake insurance and a flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Standard homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood or earthquake damage.
