Whatcom County is submitting permits and developing construction plans for the roadway repairs to Deer Trail. Construction is expected in late summer/early fall of 2021. A geotechnical consulting engineer has been hired to provide support to the County in developing the roadway repair plans, which will include a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall at the toe of the slide repair, and within County right of way limits. The project will also add a stabilized armored slope buttress from the top of the MSE wall to the edge of the reconstructed roadway shoulder.
Starting in July, roadway users can expect short-term traffic delays on Deer Trail when a drilling rig will obtain soil borings in the roadway. This data will be used to assist with developing the roadway repair design.
An Emergency Proclamation has been issued by the Whatcom County Executive to facilitate faster permitting and construction of the roadway repairs in 2021.
