Vaccine Data
As of August 14, 56.9% of all Whatcom residents are fully vaccinated, and 62.3% have gotten at least one dose. Out of everyone who’s currently eligible, including adolescents and teens ages 12-17, 71.4% have gotten at least one dose.
The Delta variant is causing a surge in cases locally and nationally. The COVID-19 vaccine can protect you from the worst outcomes of this disease, but only after full vaccination. If you’ve only had one dose of Pfizer or Moderna, make sure you get your second dose as soon as recommended. You’re considered fully vaccinated two weeks after your second dose of Pfizer or Moderna, or two weeks after your first and only Johnson & Johnson shot.
We aren’t publishing vaccine infographics every week now, but we’ll still make them every other week. You can look forward to a vaccine data visual next Thursday.

“Booster” Doses
The FDA, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup recommended a third dose of Pfizer or Moderna for certain immunocompromised groups. They recommended a third dose for these groups because people with moderate to severely compromised immune systems are both more likely to get severely ill from COVID-19 and are less likely to have gotten full immunity from just two doses. There is currently no recommendation for another dose for those who previously received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Third doses for others who are not immunocompromised are not yet authorized, but are in process. We will provide updates and let you know when the authorization process is finished.
Masks Required In All Public Indoor Space, Even If Vaccinated
Yesterday, the Governor expanded the existing mask mandate to include all people, vaccinated and unvaccinated, in indoor settings. The expansion goes into effect Monday, August 23. That means you’ll need to bring a mask with you and wear it whenever you’re in a grocery store, shopping mall, restaurant, business storefront or public-facing office, whether or not you’re vaccinated, beginning next Monday.
A few exemptions remain in place. For more information about these exemptions and the expanded mask mandate, check out our Newsflash on the subject.
