Whatcom County Government Flood Response Update

COUNTY CREATES FLOOD WEBPAGE, ROAD IMPACTS CONTINUE


WHATCOM COUNTY, WA - As of Thursday evening, weather conditions have improved, although we are expecting some additional rain and weather through tomorrow. This is aiding in cleanup efforts and damage assessment efforts across the county.  Many of the roads that were underwater are now being examined, along with bridges and levees. Drivers should respect all road closed signs and exercise caution as road beds may have been compromised.

VOLUNTEERS MOBILIZE

There are multiple volunteer groups who are beginning to arrive in Whatcom County including Samaritans Purse, Salvation army, Team Rubicon, and others to assist in cleanup.  Our local industries, including BP Cherry Point and the Ferndale Refinery are providing direct support with personnel and equipment.  Farmers Equipment have provided large farm tractors that were used to evacuate people from their homes in Sumas.


ROAD IMPACTS

  • Lake Whatcom Boulevard remains closed for emergency culvert repairs and will remain closed through the afternoon/evening of Friday, 11/19. The closure is between Lake Louise Rd and Cain Lake/South Bay Rd.

Lake Whatcom Boulevard detours:

  • Southbound traffic should follow detour signs via Cain Lake Road to I5; 
  • Northbound traffic should follow detour signs via Lake Louise or Lake Whatcom Blvd. 
  • PSE will close N. Lake Samish Drive overnight, 6pm to 6am, November 18-19 for urgent repairs caused by the recent landslide in the area. Expect the road to be closed from Prescott Lane to the Interstate 5 Southbound on-ramp at 1215 N. Lake Samish Drive. Flaggers will be on site to assist drivers at both closure points.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Do not attempt to drive across standing water or on roads that have been closed.

  • Please limit travel in the county to essential trips only. 

  • Call 911 for flood-related emergencies. Do not call 911 for non-emergencies.
