Public Works - Lummi Island Ferry and Roadways

- UPDATE 11/19 AT 9:58AM: Slater Road is open, Haxton Road is open with signage warning drivers there is still some water on the roadway. Please drive slowly to avoid hydroplaning in any remaining water.
- UPDATE 11/18 AT 3:18PM Haxton Way will re-close, just south of the Red River Bridge (County Bridge #11), at approximately 9pm today, Thursday, 11/18. We appreciate the Lummi Nation’s initiative to open Haxton Way with their forces; however, without their pilot car and flagger support, we will have to close the roadway at 9pm for the safety of the motoring public. We will re-assess the situation on Friday morning, 11/19, by 9 AM. We will continue to use this Lummi Island and Peninsula Flood Update to post updates when they are available. For your own safety, and the safety of numerous first responders, please obey all road closed signs. No additional updates are scheduled for this evening. Additional updates will be made tomorrow, 11/19.
- UPDATE 11/18 AT 12:15PM Whatcom County has conditionally opened Haxton Way. Lummi Nation is operating a pilot car/flagging operation to accommodate one lane of traffic. Public Works will continue to monitor the situation. A further update will be provided around 5:00 p.m. this evening.
- UPDATE 11/17 AT 7:15PM Haxton Way/Chachusen Road are currently closed due to standing water. We expect conditions to continue to improve, and will assess periodically overnight. It is likely that the road will reopen at some point in the morning of Thursday, Nov. 18.
- UPDATE 11/17 AT 8:34AM All roads from Lummi Peninsula remain unsafe. We will continue to monitor the roadways and provide an update later today. DO not attempt to drive on flooded or closed roads. Call 911 for emergencies.
- UPDATE 11/16 AT 6:00PM The emergency evacuation route that was previously posted has significant standing water on Hillaire between Kwina and Red River roads. Please do not attempt to drive across any standing water on roadways. There could be dangers under the water that are not visible.
