[ARCHIVED] Introducing The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline debuted Saturday, July 16. This free and confidential 24/7 national lifeline connects people in need to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

People can use the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for themselves or someone else they are worried about who may need crisis support. Call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org/chat/ to access the lifeline. Call services are available in multiple languages while text and chat services are available in English only.

People can contact 988 if they are having:

  • Thoughts of suicide.
  • Mental health crises.
  • Substance use crises.
  • Other kinds of emotional distress.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is an added network of crisis center providers in Washington state and will not replace any pre-existing crisis call centers. The current National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), will remain active along with 988.
