[ARCHIVED] Lummi Island Ferry Fare Proposal: Next Steps

Whatcom County Public Works proposes increasing ferry fares in 2023 to comply with the farebox recovery rate mandated in Whatcom County Code. The initial fare proposal was released on December 1, 2022, and reviewed in the Whatcom County Council Finance and Administrative Services Committee on January 10, 2023. It was also placed as an ‘Introduction Item’ on the Whatcom County Council agenda on January 10, 2023.

Next Steps:  The updated ferry fare proposal is scheduled for a public hearing at the Whatcom County Council meeting on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at 6:00 pm. This is a chance to voice your opinion about the proposal on record. There are several ways to make that happen:

  1. Attend the Whatcom County Council meeting in person. *
Click here for more information on attending a Council meeting. See the ‘Attend in Person’ tab.

*Be advised that the Lummi Island Ferry has a planned emergency service outage on the evening of January 24. The last ferry run will be the 9:10 pm leaving Gooseberry Point. Whatcom County Public Works is aware of the inadvertent impact this poses on attending the County Council meeting in person. The public hearing is at the top of the agenda and should begin within the first 10 minutes of the meeting.  Click here to view the Whatcom County Council meeting agenda for January 24

  1. Participate in the County Council meeting remotely via Zoom or phone.
Click here to view instructions on participating remotely. See the ‘Participate Remotely’ tab.
  1. Submit your comments to the County Council in writing.
Click here for more information on submitting written testimony. See the ‘Submit Written Comment’ tab.

If you do not wish to speak at the Council meeting but would like to watch the meeting online or listen via phone, click here for instructions on joining remotely. See the ‘Watch or Listen Live’ tab.

Prior to the public hearing on January 24, representatives from the Lummi Island Ferry Advisory Committee will participate in a fare proposal discussion during the Whatcom County Council Finance and Administrative Services Committee at 11:05 am. This is not a public hearing (i.e., no public comments are taken), but the public is welcome to attend the meeting online or in person.
